Earning a living doesn’t mean you have to be “glued” to the desk and chair at all times. Look for ways to move around the office, even if it’s just for a five minute stretch here and there. Only your fingers and hands are doing the exercise when the rest of your body wants a break! Remember, your body and mind will feel better for it. Be aware of how you sit in your chair, are you slumping over your desk? Are your shoulder’s slouched over your chest and is your back straight? Try not to cross your legs while sitting, this can cause circulation problems!
Here are some ideas that I use:
1. Walk around the building or parking lot. If weather is bad, then walk inside the building. Even stand up and stretch…just get up and move.
2. Because Isometimes wear shoes that aren’t so comfortable for walking in (but want to be stylish), I always have a pair of “walking” shoes with me. Then during lunch I can walk in comfortable shoes without hurting myself on the pavement or grass.
3. Some days I feel like I am stuck in my chair so I set my alarm on my phone and that alarm reminds me to get up and “breathe” and talk a break. Many of you that use the mouse will find that you are having shoulder and arm pain. When I take a break I move the “mouse” arm around and get the circulation back in that arm as well.
4. My office building is pretty close to the parking lot so I don’t have to walk too far (I guess I could park in the mall next to the building and then walk. But I may not come back to work if there’s a good sale). Anyway, consider parking further away so you can get the exercise and enjoy the season!!!
There are so many other things you can do to stay active at work. If you have any ideas I could add to this list, e-mail me at frannie@jdpremium.com
